What To Expect While Recovering From Facelift Surgery

Wondering what the recovery process looks like after a facelift? Here are responses to some of the most frequent questions our patients ask regarding their recovery from facelift surgery.

How long does it take to recover from facelift surgery?

The at-home recovery ranges from 1-2 weeks depending on your facelift procedure.

• Mini Lift: 7 days
• Facelift: 10-14 days
• Neck Lift: 7 days
• Chin Lipo: 7 days

By the 7-14 day mark, all sutures are typically removed, and any bruising has usually subsided.

Is facelift recovery painful?

A mild ache near the ears along with tightness in the jaw and neck is common during the first night following surgery, but this sensation diminishes each day. The majority of patients shift from opiate pain relief to standard Tylenol within the first week. The tightness gradually subsides over several weeks.

How long does swelling and bruising last?

The majority of swelling and bruising is expected to diminish considerably within 2 weeks. By 6 weeks post-surgery, 90% should subside, with the remaining 10% gradually fading in the following months. Ultimately, all swelling and bruising will fully resolve.

When can I go back to work/socializing?

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 2 weeks after their surgery. However, if you have an active job you may need to take additional time off, as any lifting or intense activity may cause a rise in blood pressure which can worsen swelling and slow the healing process. As for socializing, it is best to initially only associate with close family or friends who will be supportive and positive.

Do I need to follow a specific diet after my surgery?

For the first week post-surgery, a soft diet is best. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol intake and do not smoke. Caffeine is okay as long as the amount is not dramatically different from what you are used to.

When can I start exercising again?

No heavy lifting or strenuous activity should be done for at least 2 weeks but full activity can be resumed 1 month after surgery, unless we advise otherwise during your post-op visit.

When can I start wearing makeup again?

Makeup should not be applied over incisions until 2-4 weeks after surgery. We always recommend fragrance-free, hypoallergenic mineral based powders. To conceal bruising, we recommend a thick makeup base or concealer with a yellow base.
