What To Expect While Recovering From Rhinoplasty

October 22, 2024

If you have been considering rhinoplasty (a "nose job"), you are likely wondering what the recovery process looks like. Knowing what to expect during your recovery time can help you plan around work and other social engagements, as well as put your mind at ease in regards to any concerns you have. Here are answers to the most common questions we get about the rhinoplasty recovery period.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

The at-home portion of recovery is 1 week for most patients. For the first 24 hours, your nose will be packed to reduce oozing and you will likely have a mustache dressing over the upper lip to collect any nasal drainage. These will be removed the day after surgery. You will also be required to wear a protective splint. The splint, along with any visible stitches between the nostrils, will be removed after 5-7 days.

Is rhinoplasty recovery painful?

Most patients report discomfort rather than pain. You may feel a dull ache around the nose the first night after surgery but the discomfort will reduce significantly after that. In fact, most patients are more bothered by postoperative nasal congestion than pain. You will be given instructions on how to minimize any discomfort so that you can recover as quickly as possible.

How long does swelling and bruising last?

Most of the swelling and bruising will subside within the first week. When the splint is first removed, your nose will appear swollen. The swelling will increase before it begins to subside, so don't worry if it initially looks worse. Generally 90% of swelling is reduced within the first 6 weeks with the remaining 10% slowly reducing within the first year.

When can I go back to work/school/socializing?

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work or school within 2 weeks after their surgery. However, if you have an active job you may need to take additional time off, as any lifting or intense activity may cause a rise in blood pressure which can worsen swelling and slow the healing process. As for socializing, it is best to initially only associate with close family or friends who will be supportive and positive.

Do I need to follow a specific diet after my surgery?

For the first week post-surgery, a soft diet is best. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol intake and do not smoke. Caffeine is okay as long as the amount is not dramatically different from what you are used to.

When can I start exercising again?

When you return to exercise depends upon how your recovery has progressed. Some patients can start exercising at 50% of what they normally do at 2 weeks, while others must wait 1 month.

When can I start wearing makeup again?

Makeup may be worn right away after your procedure in areas away from incisions or resurfaced skin. A thick makeup base or concealer with a yellow base is useful to conceal bruising. Generally, makeup should not be applied over incisions or resurfaced areas until 2-4 weeks after the procedure. We always recommend fragrance-free, hypoallergenic mineral based powders.

What our patients have said about their recovery after rhinoplasty:

"I am 24 and have never had surgery before, so he took the time to address all of my questions and concerns, and going into the surgery I was so excited. When I had questions while I was healing he took my calls (and it was on 4th of July weekend)! I’m so in love with my new nose, and it’s only 11 days post-op...I can’t wait to see it progress as the weeks go by!"

"This was my first surgery of any kind and my first time on anesthesia. Three days after surgery, I was sufficiently recovered and moved to Chicago -- nose cast, furniture, boxes, and all. Two weeks after, I was back to work."

"Here I am six days post operation, and am truly pleased. There was such minimal pain, I only had to use one prescribed pain pill, and a couple of Tylenol but other than that, it was a breeze! Dr. Patel sends you home (at your pre-op appointment) with a folder of info with follow up steps that initially seem daunting but is very obtainable and easy to follow."

"I could not have picked a better surgeon for my procedure. It is only POD 10 today but I can already tell that my nose will keep looking better and better...The recovery process was easy and quick, some residual bruising up until now I was back to work at POD 8. I would recommend Dr. Patel to my friends and family. He truly is an asset to the Milwaukee and Wisconsin market in facial plastic surgery."
