Removing A Hump On The Bridge Of The Nose With Rhinoplasty

A hump on the bridge of the nose, also referred to as a "dorsal hump", is probably the most common feature altered with rhinoplasty. It is usually either the result of genetics or an injury. This feature often causes individuals to be insecure about the appearance of their side profile. Rhinoplasty is the only way to effectively remove a hump on the bridge of the nose. Most plastic surgeons consider rhinoplasty to be a difficult operation due to the complicated anatomy and potential effects on breathing. For this reason it is best to choose a facial plastic surgeon, as they are not only trained in cosmetic rhinoplasty but also nasal airway surgery.

Preparing For Rhinoplasty Surgery

At Visage Facial Plastic Surgery, your plastic surgery journey starts with a phone consultation with our patient coordinator. She will answer your questions, give a cost estimate and schedule your in-office appointment if you are a candidate for rhinoplasty surgery. You can schedule this phone consultation by clicking here.

During your in-person consultation with Dr. Patel, he will review the changes you want to make and examine your nose. Your photograph will be taken and digitally altered to establish a common goal for the outcome of surgery. Dr. Patel brings these pictures into the operating room to assist him in surgery.

Your final visit prior to surgery is called a "pre-op". At this visit, you will be given more instructions on how to prepare for and recover from your rhinoplasty procedure.

Cost

The cost range for rhinoplasty is approximately $5,500 - $12,500 depending on the extent of work needed.

Surgery

A primary rhinoplasty for dorsal hump removal is performed under general anesthesia and takes 3-4 hours on average. During surgery, the bone and cartilage of the hump are carefully removed.  After the hump is removed, the sides of the nose are pushed inward to narrow the new bridge in a finessed and controlled manner. Finally, the width of the nasal valve area is checked. A narrow nasal valve not only makes breathing more difficult, it may create a visible indentation that looks like an upside-down ‘V’. If narrow, the nasal valve area is widened with cartilage grafts from the nasal septum, creating a smooth flow from the top to bottom of the nose.

The gallery below shows examples of patients Dr. Patel has worked on to create a straighter looking nose.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The at-home recovery time for rhinoplasty is typically 1 week. During that time, there are external and internal splints but no nasal packing. A mustache dressing is taped over the upper lip to passively collect any nasal drainage for the first 24-48 hours. With an open rhinoplasty, there will be stitches located between the nostrils. The splint and all visible stitches are removed after 5-7 days. While 90% of swelling resolves in the first 6 weeks, it may take up to 6 months for swelling to completely resolve and reveal your true results.
