Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles: What Are The Treatments?

Apr 20, 2023

Wrinkles are often thought of as an inevitable result of aging but there are actually many things we can do to delay them. Knowing how these wrinkles form can help us understand how to prevent them while we're young or even reverse the ones that have already formed.

Dynamic Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are the deep lines formed over time by muscle contractions, such as when you smile, squint, or frown. Since skin loses elasticity as we age, these lines eventually stop smoothing out when our faces relax. Botulinum injections can help correct and possibly prevent dynamic wrinkles. You can read more about it in this article. Below is a breakdown of the different types of dynamic wrinkles and how we can treat them.

1. Forehead Lines, or glabella lines, are the wrinkles that form horizontally across your forehead. Forehead lines are treated with spaced-apart injections for an even, symmetrical result. We inject toward the temples to avoid an overly-arched brow.

2. Frown Lines, also known as the "11's", are the two vertical lines that form between the eyebrows. Contrary to the name, these aren't just caused by frowning. Laughing and smiling activate those muscles too. We can treat these with direct injections at 2 to 4 sites. The injections are placed directly into the glabellar muscles to minimize complications such as eyelid ptosis.

3. Bunny lines are horizontal wrinkles that form on your nose in the area between the eyes when you squint, laugh or scrunch your nose. They can be reduced when directly injected at 1 to 3 sites.

4. Crows feet are the wrinkles on the outer corners of the eyes. These are primarily caused by squinting and blinking. The area is injected at 2 to 6 sites on both sides. The injections are not made deep to minimize complications such as eyelid ptosis.

5. Lip lines, the wrinkles that form when pursing the lip, can be directly injected with a minimal amount of botulinum. This helps to reduce the appearance of these lines while avoiding paralyzing the muscles that are vital for eating and talking.

6. Chin dimpling may be softened with 2-4 injections directly into the strong chin muscle. This may also help reduce the appearance of a prominent chin.

How To Prevent Dynamic Wrinkles

Now, we don't recommend not smiling, but it can help to be aware of your resting facial expression. Oftentimes, we are unconsciously contracting these muscles, especially when staring at our computer or phone screens. Wearing glasses when you need them and sunglasses while outdoors is also important for reducing the amount of squinting you do.

Static Wrinkles

The breakdown of collagen, elastin and fat loss in the face happens naturally as we age, but is accelerated by sun damage, smoking, lack of nutrients and genetics. As a result, the skin becomes more lax and static wrinkles form. Dermal fillers add volume, making them a great nonsurgical option for filling in these types of wrinkles. Dermal fillers come in brands such as Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm. Here are a few types of static wrinkles that fillers can treat.

1. Laugh lines, or nasolabial folds, extend from the side of the nostril down next to the corner of the mouth. For many, they are among the first signs of facial aging and worsen as the we lose volume and gain laxity with aging. Dermal filler is injected under the laugh line crease to soften it. We do not believe in trying to flatten the area completely to avoid an unnatural appearance.

2. Marionette lines extend from the corner of the mouth down between the chin and jowl (prejowl area). Dermal filler may be placed into the marionette line and prejowl area to make the jawline appear smoother from chin to the ear. Any downturn at the corners of the mouth may also be filled and raised into a more upturned position.

3. While frown lines are best treated with botulinum injections, deeply etched “eleven” lines between the eyes may require more volume. Dermal filler may be injected to help conceal these lines.

How To Prevent Static Wrinkles

You can't avoid aging but you can avoid some of the causes previously mentioned. Not smoking, wearing sunscreen, proper skincare, and a nutritious diet will all go a long way in keeping your skin youthful longer.

Keep in mind that the results from botulinum injections and dermal fillers are only temporary. For more advanced wrinkles and skin laxity, surgical procedures (such as a facelift/minilift, neck lift, or brow lift to name a few) can give more dramatic and longer lasting results.
