Introduction to Botulinum Injections

Botulinum is an injectable muscle-relaxing agent approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, namely the reduction of dynamic wrinkles. Many brands of Botulinum are available including Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®. They are composed of slightly different molecules. In our experience, their effects are similar in most patients, however, this may vary from patient to patient.

Over time, repetitive facial movements like smiling, frowning, or raising the brow will lead to deep facial wrinkles. These lines may make us look sad, angry, tired, or just plain old. Botulinum injections are effective at reducing or eliminating the appearance of facial wrinkles. The procedure is easy to undergo with virtually no downtime. Many believe regular, early treatments may even be preventative, delaying the appearance of deep wrinkles. If you are looking for a light rejuvenation, it is definitely worth a try.

Areas Treated

Forehead Lines

Forehead lines are treated with spaced-apart injections. This ensures an even, symmetric treatment, and minimizes descent of the brows. The treatment is limited toward the temples to maintain a normal arch to the brow without creating an overly-arched brow. The number of units required here varies widely due to patient variability (~5-20 units).

Frown (Glabellar) Lines

Frown lines, or “elevens”, between the eyes are directly injected at 2 to 4 sites. The injections are placed directly into the glabellar muscles to minimize complications such as eyelid ptosis. The number of units required varies from about 8-16 units.

Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are the horizontal lines that form when scrunching the nose. They are directly injected at 1 to 3 sites. The number of units required varies from about 4 to 12 units.

Crow's Feet & Cheek Wrinkles

The lines that deepen to the sides of the eyes and cheek when squinting are the crow’s feet and cheek wrinkles. The area is generally injected at 2 to 6 sites on both sides. The injections are not made deep to minimize complications such as eyelid ptosis. The number of units required varies from about 8 to 24 units.

Nonsurgical Brow Lift

Muscles below the tail of the brow that usually pull the brow down are injected in 1 to 2 sites on both sides. The injections are not made deep to minimize complications such as eyelid ptosis. Relaxing the muscle that pulls the brow downward allows the brow to migrate upward. The number of units required varies from about 4 to 8 units.

Lip Lines

Lips lines formed when pursing the lip are directly injected with a very small amount of Botulinum. This helps to reduce the appearance of these lines while not paralyzing muscles that are vital for eating and talking. The number of units required varies from about 2 to 8 units.

Chin Dimpling

Chin dimpling may be softened with 2-4 injections directly into the strong chin muscle. This may also help reduce the appearance of a prominent chin. The number of units required varies from about 4 to 8 units.

Planning Your Procedure

How Its Done

Patient comfort and safety is a priority. Prior to injection, the skin is cleansed and, per the patient’s preference, anesthesia is applied. The combination of topical numbing cream and ice provides very effective anesthesia. The needles used for the treatment are very small. The injections only take minutes to perform.

Recovery

Most have little-to-no downtime after treatment. Temporary redness and/or swelling at the injection site is common but resolves quickly. As with any injection, bruising is also a possibility.

Results

The appearance of your wrinkles begins to improve within 2-3 days, with full results developing gradually over the next 2 weeks. Most patients achieve their desired results after just one treatment. The results of Botulinum injections typically last three months.

Safety Profile & Side Effects

Botulinum injections have been used for decades for cosmetic purposes without serious or long-term side effects. The risk of cosmetically disturbing results like a “frozen” face, droopy eyelid, or unnatural look is minimized with a skilled injector who has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy.
