Prejuvenation versus Rejuvenation: When is the right time to prevent or treat facial aging?

Prejuvenation treatments slow down signs of aging before they become apparent. There is never a ‘wrong’ time to start preventative treatments for facial aging, but it is best to start before lines/wrinkles become deeply etched in the skin. A routine daily skincare regimen and sun protection are the most basic ways to prevent facial aging. Botox injections (every 3-4 months) are minimally invasive treatments, with virtually no downtime, that prevent lines/wrinkles from deepening in the areas around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the brows (11’s) and horizontal forehead lines. Dermal filler can be used to refresh and plump up the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and lips. Superficial to medium-depth facial peels will help resurface your skin and improve tone giving you a youthful glow.

Rejuvenation, on the other hand, helps restore youth by treating signs of aging that are already present. Accelerated signs of aging can be due to multiple factors including genetics and/or increased sun exposure, therefore, there is no ‘right’ time to start these treatments. When deeper lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, and volume loss start to bother you, it may be time to focus on restorative treatments. Treatments under this umbrella generally include targeted skin care routines, more intense resurfacing procedures (deeper peels and lasers) and aesthetic injections. Sometimes surgical intervention may be the best answer, but there are great minimally invasive options that we would be happy to discuss with you at your consultation. Retinoid/retinols are a wonderful addition to your everyday skin care routine that promote cell turnover, even pigment, increase collagen production, and improve fine lines and wrinkles. More intense resurfacing treatments for pigment, texture and tone can be achieved via deeper chemical peels or laser treatments. Botox and filler can improve deeper lines/wrinkles and restore more prominent volume loss in a natural way.

Despite all these wonderful treatments, we continue to age, but following routine protocols will help maintain your youth and can even turn back the hands of time a notch or two. These treatments do require upkeep, so it is important you work with your provider to stay on a regular schedule. We cannot prevent aging all together, nor would we like to, but what we can do here at Visage is help you feel more confident in your current stage of life!
