What To Expect While Recovering From Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Wondering what the blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) recovery process is like? Below are answers to some of the most common questions patients ask about recovering from eyelid surgery.
How long does it take to recover from blepharoplasty?
Everyone heals at a different pace but most patients experience an initial at-home recovery period of about 5-7 days. Immediately after surgery, we place protective tape strips over the incisions. They are removed the following day. Sutures are removed by the end of the first week. At that point, many patients feel comfortable returning to work and light daily activities, though mild swelling or bruising may still be present.
More noticeable swelling and bruising generally improve within 10-14 days, while residual swelling can take several weeks to fully resolve. Final results will appear over the next few months once swelling subsides completely and incisions fade.
Is blepharoplasty recovery painful?
Most patients find the discomfort as mild. You may experience a dull ache, tightness, or heaviness around the eyes the first night. This should improve significantly each day thereafter. Prescription pain medication may be used briefly, though many patients transition to Tylenol within a few days. Temporary dryness and mild irritation, is also common while swelling is present.
How long do swelling and bruising last?
Swelling and bruising are expected and typically most noticeable during the first two weeks. 90% of swelling should resolve within one month. Keeping your head elevated can help minimize swelling.
When can I return to work or social activities?
Many patients feel ready to return to work and social events by 2 weeks post-op, depending on their comfort level and how visible their bruising is. If your job involves heavy lifting, bending, or strenuous physical activity, you may need additional time. We will guide you based on your individual recovery progress.
Do I need to follow a specific diet after surgery?
A healthy diet supports healing and helps reduce swelling. During the first week after surgery, we recommend:
- Eating a nutritious, balanced diet
- Keeping sodium and sugar intake low
- Staying well-hydrated
- Avoiding alcohol
- Avoiding smoking
- Keeping caffeine intake consistent with the amount you typically drink
When can I start exercising again?
Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery to promote circulation. Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 2-4 weeks.
When can I start wearing makeup again?
We advise patients to wait a few weeks before applying eye makeup to ensure proper incision healing. Read this article for recommendations on what types of makeup ingredient to look for when reintroducing makeup into your beauty routine after eyelid surgery.
