Wearing Makeup After Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

August 6, 2024

When can you wear eye makeup after blepharoplasty?

Following eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), we usually advise patients to wait a few weeks before applying eye makeup. This can be difficult for those who typically rely on eye makeup as part of their daily routine. However, it is important to prioritize the health and recovery of your eyes to achieve the best possible results from the surgery.

Why do you have to wait to apply makeup around the eyes after blepharoplasty?

  • To minimize irritation/bruising caused by putting pressure on incision sites.
  • Bacteria from makeup and makeup applicators can cause an infection.
  • Makeup can get trapped in incision and cause lasting marks after healing.
  • Pressure/pulling can interfere with the position of the healing eyelid tissue and negatively impact your results.

Once your incisions have fully healed and you have received the green light from your plastic surgeon to resume applying makeup, you can start reintroducing your favorite cosmetics back into your beauty routine. To ensure the continued healing and appearance of your eyes post-surgery, follow these tips:

  • Purchase new makeup and brushes, as old ones can harbor bacteria.
  • Check the label to ensure products are fragrance-free & hypoallergenic/non-comedogenic.
  • Mineral-based powders are best. Avoid glittery cosmetics for now.
  • Water-based cosmetics (like mascara, eyeliner and makeup remover) are easiest to apply and remove.
  • Avoid alcohol-based products to avoid irritation/drying.
  • Be very gentle when applying and removing makeup.

Selecting an experienced plastic surgeon and following their post-operative guidelines will result in refreshed, eyes and a smoother canvas for applying your eye makeup.
