Upper Eyelid Surgery For Hooded Eyelids

April 20, 2022

Upper eyelid hooding is the term used when the skin below the eyebrow covers the eyelid crease, concealing some or all of the eyelid. While not always a negative trait, hooded eyelids can interfere with the application of eye makeup or, in severe cases, obstruct vision. Troublesome hooded eyelids can be corrected with a surgery known as blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty Procedure Details

An upper eyelid lift (a type of blepharoplasty) involves removing a strip of skin from the natural crease of the upper eyelid.

Surgery Duration: 1-3 hours

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia in the office, with the patient awake and eyes closed.

The procedure involves making well-concealed incision from the natural crease into the squint line. The excess "hooded" skin is trimmed and any excess fat is removed. The incisions are then closed and suspended with sutures. Here at Visage Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Patel uses a conservative approach with tissue removal to avoid an over-done look. In some cases, a brow lift can be combined with blepharoplasty for even better results.

At-Home Recovery: Approximately 5-7 days.

Immediately after the procedure, there will be protective strips of tape placed over any upper eyelid incisions and the incisions at the outer corners of the eye. These will restrict eye-opening but are very helpful in reducing swelling. They are removed the following day. Patients will typically be applying drops and ointment to the eyes around the clock to ensure proper moisture. By the end of the first week, all sutures are removed. Blepharoplasty patients are usually able to resume their normal activities (ie. exercise, wearing makeup) 3-4 weeks after surgery.
