Repairing Torn Earlobes With Split Earlobe Repair Surgery

Anand Patel • March 23, 2021

Large earrings can make a great fashion statement. Unfortunately, they also come with the risk of damaging the earlobes. This may happen over time from continuously wearing heavy earrings or as a result of the earrings being forcefully pulled or snagged on something. At Visage Facial Plastic Surgery, we can repair split earlobes in a manner that restores a normal appearance to the earlobe and allows future re-piercing.

How is the surgery performed?

Earlobe repair surgery is done in our office under local anesthesia. Dr. Patel fixes split earlobes by removing excess skin, restructuring it to create a round earlobe and stitching it up.

How long does earlobe surgery take?

Split earlobe repairs are performed fairly quickly, often in less than an hour.

Is split earlobe repair painful?

The procedure itself is not painful, as the ears will be numbed with local anesthesia. Once anesthesia wears off, a dull ache is normal but can be managed with the pain medication provided to you. After the first 24 hours, the discomfort will reduce significantly. Some ear sensitivity may linger for a few weeks.

How long does recovery take?

Earlobe repairs typically have a down time as little as 1-2 days. The surgical site is dressed with ointment alone. Stitches are removed after 5-7 days. Swelling and bruising are expected, but mostly subside in the first 2 weeks. Most bruising may be concealed with cover-up as it gradually fades. On average, 90% of the swelling subsides by 2 months after surgery. The ears may be re-pierced once fully healed.
