Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty: What Is The Difference?

Anand Patel • March 25, 2020
Rhinoplasty can be approached using one of two techniques: Open (also known as external) or closed (also referred to as endonasal, incisionless, or scarless). When researching the decision to undergo rhinoplasty, many prospective patients are confused about which option is best for them.

Fortunately, this is not a decision that a patient must make on their own. The type of procedure should ultimately be determined by the surgeon during the consultation. That is because the best option will depend on the individual's nose structure, desired results, complexity of the procedure, and the technique the surgeon is most comfortable performing. However, some patients still find it helpful to understand each approach. This infographic gives an overview of the difference between the two types of procedures.
As you can see, there are pros and cons to each approach. For patients who want significant modifications to the tip or bridge of the nose, or those who need placement of complex grafts, an open rhinoplasty will be the better choice. The endonasal or “incisionless” option is better for patients who mostly want minor bridge and tip work.

Dr. Anand Patel is trained in both open and closed rhinoplasty, and can guide you in this decision. To schedule a consultation, call us at (262) 701-7040 or email info@visageface.com.
