Acne is a common condition seen in all age groups. When your pores become clogged by surface dirt and oils, your skin can produce black heads, white heads and pimples. These small blemishes can be uncomfortable, may result in lasting scars, and can be emotionally challenging to manage.

How do you treat adult acne?

Acne can be stubborn and often requires a multifaceted approach. If over-the-counter cleansers that target bacteria (such as benzoyl peroxide) aren't providing relief, we strongly suggest consulting a dermatologist. In some cases, they will prescribe topical or systematic antibiotics to use alongside topical products like benzoyl peroxide. Contraceptive pills or hormonal therapies may also be prescribed to help manage acne.

Facial peels are great supplementary treatments to improve your acne symptoms. Specifically salicylic acid-based peels can help remove the most superficial layers of your damaged skin by dissolving dead skin cells. This in turn prevents the buildup and clogging of pores on your skin surface. Salicylic acid peels are anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and promote good complexion for those with oily skin. Our ZO 3-Step Peel, Stimulator Peel and PCA modified Jessner peels all have a salicylic acid component. Deeper peels such as our phenol peel or lasers can address more severe scarring. It is important to note that a series of facial peels will not treat the underlying cause but can help improve symptoms.

Retinoids like retinol and Retin-A are excellent treatment choices for individuals susceptible to acne. These creams aid in preventing the accumulation of oil and debris on the skin. It is important to use these products carefully and to avoid sun exposure. Be sure to consult with your healthcare provider before embarking on your retinoid journey.
