As we transition into the warmer months of summer, it's essential to adjust our skincare routine to ensure our skin stays healthy and glowing. Here are some quick and effective skincare tips to keep in mind during the summer season:
1. Sun Protection
Sun avoidance and application of sunscreen are the most important factors in protecting your skin from aging.
- Apply sunscreen 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and every 2 hours, as needed.
- Use sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 or greater with protection against UVA/UVB rays.
- Use water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating excessively.
- Mineral based sunscreens with zinc oxide/titanium dioxide can be used and will provide an extra layer of protection by reflecting light away from the surface before the sun penetrates your skin.
Recommended product:
ZO Smart Tone Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 has the benefit of a self-adjusting tint to complement most skin tones while giving your skin a nice healthy glow.
2. Reconsider Retinols
If you continue to use retinol products in the summer, keep your face out of the sun! Consider alternative products in addition to the basic steps of cleansing, exfoliating and toning.
- In addition to the application of sunscreen, wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your skin from harmful rays.
- Exposure to sun, while on retinol products, can increase risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring.
Recommended products:
ZO BrightAlive is a non-retinol, non-hydroquinone skin brightener that can increase skin clarity and help fade the appearance of dark spots for a brighter complexion.
ZO 10% Vitamin C Self-Activating is another non-retinol, non-hydroquinone skin brightener that helps minimize the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles.
3. Avoid Deep Skin Resurfacing
- While deep skin resurfacing is the best answer for deeper lines/wrinkles, summer may not be the right time for these procedures.
- It may be best to wait until the fall/winter months to proceed with deeper skin resurfacing.
Recommended product: Our
ZO Stimulator Peel
is a lighter facial peel that can still be performed during the summer to keep your skin looking fresh.
4. Stay hydrated!
- Dehydrated skin can appear dull, tight, inflamed, congested, or even flaky.
- Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it requires hydration. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, staying hydrated will promote good skin health.
- Facial moisturizing is crucial during this time as sun and heat exposure is dehydrating.
- Water based products, serums and moisturizers are all great products to bring to your daily routine. Try avoiding drying ingredients like alcohol-based products.
