With cold and flu season lingering in the air, patients often ask about interactions between aesthetic injectables and antibiotics, vaccines or other medications. Let’s help put your mind at ease and review a list of some medications to avoid prior to your injectable treatments.
Antibiotics
Not all antibiotics interact with Dysport, but it is recommended to wait until you are healthy and off antibiotics prior to your visit. Certain antibiotics, particularly aminoglycosides (ex. Gentamicin, Neomycin, Amikacin, Tobramycin, Streptomycin) can potentiate the effects of a neurotoxin like Dysport. Lincosamides (ex. Clindamycin) can also impact your neurotoxin results. Try to avoid any Dysport injections until at least one week after completing your last dose of antibiotic.
Vaccinations
It is our recommendation to receive vaccinations either two weeks before or two weeks after any Dysport or dermal filler appointments to avoid potential adverse reactions.
Medications
Certain over the counter and prescription medications can thin your blood and should be avoided at least one week prior to injections to achieve best results. Anticoagulants, NSAIDs and antiplatelets such as Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, etc. should be avoided to prevent bruising. Always check with your prescribing provider prior to discontinuing any prescription medication. Tylenol is OK to take before and after treatments, this type of pain reliever does not thin your blood. Certain blood thinning supplements and vitamins should be discontinued such as fish oil, garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, ephedra, kava, valerian, St. John’s wort, echinacea, evening primrose oil, and flaxseed oil.
Other drugs that may interact with the effects of Dysport are muscle relaxants (ex. Cyclobenzaprine), anticholinergic drugs (ex. Oxybutynin, scopolamine), D-penicillamine, cyclosporine, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors/parasympathomimetic medications (ex. Neostigmine, succinylcholine), aminoquinolones, quinidines, and magnesium sulfate.
Please check with your provider if you have any questions or concerns about your upcoming treatment. Remember to disclose all current medications prior to your treatment. As a reminder, always consult with your primary care physician prior to discontinuing any prescription medications.
