10 Ways to Prepare Your Skin for Cold Weather

“You know nothing about keeping your skin healthy in cold weather, Jon Snow.”

Game of Thrones, anyone?

…Anyone?

As the cool, wet weather of the fall season changes into the cold, dryness of winter, it is a good time to make sure your skin will be protected. Between the pumpkin spice lattes of today and the first snow of this coming winter season, here are ten ways you can prepare to keep your skin healthy as the freezing winds approach. Winter is coming!
1.   Stay Hydrated. The dry winter air removes moisture from skin. Stay hydrated during the cold weather months to tackle this problem from the inside out.
2.  Try a humidifier. Still feeling dry? Humidifiers put moisture back into the air thus relieving itchy skin, chapped lips, and improving breathing conditions.
3.   Ditch your exfoliator. Exfoliants can have damaging effects on skin if it is already dry.  It’s time to swap it out for a gentler cleansing product.
4. Stay away from deodorant soaps and skin cleansers that contain alcohol . They may further dry out your skin.
5.  Stock up on broad-spectrum SPF. The snow and ice reflect UV rays from the sun right onto your face. Stay protected by applying sunscreen every day to all areas of skin that may be exposed to the elements.
6.  Say goodbye to super-hot showers . I know, this one is going to be hard, but extreme hot and cold temperatures can damage your skin. Warm showers will have to do for now.
7. Go shopping! Stock up on comfy, 100% cotton clothing to wear in layers. Also, avoid using fabric softeners that may irritate your skin, and stay warm out there! Windburn can be painful.
8. Develop positive eating habits. Swap some of that Halloween candy out for glowing skin-promoting fruits and vegetables. During the season of delicious foods, keep in mind that eating a healthy, balanced diet promotes healthy, balanced skin.
9. Use Vaseline to nourish chapped lips back to life. Apply Vaseline to your lips for 10 minutes and remove with a paper towel dipped in warm water. Viola! Softer lips.
10. Take a skin-promoting supplement. Supplements could never replace a healthy diet, but some believe taking Vitamin C, E, Alpha Lipolic Acid, and/or CoEnzyme Q10 tablets can provide anti-aging benefits.
